These are made for day-long backcountry trekking in deep snow and when so used will assure that once you have them on you will not have to think about them again. To make sure they don't loosen or let in snow they have buckle cinches across the top and the instep, and a sturdy hook/loop closure down the front. There is another, very beefy tab that secures the closure at the bottom to keep snow and flexing from working it loose and a flat brass hook to secure to the ring at the bottom of your winter boots. Heavy Cordura protects the bottoms and the surfaces where they might rub against each other. Gortex upper-outer for breathability.All of this is certainly overkill for a couple hours of shoveling (and there are inexpensive Chinese gaiters that are perfectly suitable for that) but for the right application I am unaware of a better product.
